It was a strange place where some kisses broke enchantments and others began them. Many said witches lived there — some with cold hearts, others with hot ovens and ugly appetites — and also dwarves in tiny houses made of stones. In this icy wood, a stepmother might eat a girl’s heart to restore her own beauty, while a woodcutter might become stupid with grief at the death of his donkey. Here a princess with too many dresses grows spiteful out of loneliness, while a mistreated girl who is kind to a crone finds pearls dropping from her mouth whenever she speaks. With empathy and an ear for emotion, Emily Jenkins retells seven fairy tales in contemporary language that reveals both the pathos and humor of some of our most beloved stories. Charming illustrations by Rohan Daniel Eason add whimsical details that enhance every new reading.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–5—Although wordy at times, Jenkins's skillful narration generally stays faithful to the source material of seven retold tales and provides depth for some characters. However, the author makes some tweaks, and her idea of "happy-ever-after" is a little different than in the original stories. In "The Frog Prince," Crystal doesn't get to throw the frog against the wall, but when the frog turns into a prince, they do fall in love and marry. Cherry—the good sister in "Toads and Pearls"—does not marry the king's son as in the Charles Perrault version. ("She wanted to make a life for herself somewhere new…. She came to a town, rented a room, and paid in pearls.") It's not clear whether Snow White will marry Prince Beacon. But Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and the "Three Great Noodles" end up pretty much as expected. Jenkins explains in a concluding author's note that her intent was to be faithful, though not necessarily accurate, in retelling the tales "to bring out what's most meaningful to me." Her occasional references to bunnies and bluebirds are a bit too cute, but the contemporary tone is effective. This slim, handsome volume includes an illustrated title page for each tale with a simple, nicely sketched setting usually framed in the forest's twining branches. If you enjoy the stories in this book, look for more fun adventures in the other books in the series. This second book in the series contains the following short stories: "Cody's Wooden Whistle" (an original story), "Adrianna's Chickens (an original story), "Liza and the Lost Letter " (an original story), "Jamila and the Tiger" (an original story), "The Peacemakers" (an original story), "Kim's Suprise Witness (adapted from a Chinese folktale), Vassilisa the Wise (adapted from a Russian folktale), "Just a Girl" (an original story), "The Clever Daughter-in-Law" (adapted from a Chinese folktale), and "Peggy's Magic Egg" (adapted from an Irish folktale),

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6. Young women from a variety of cultures are featured as heroines in this collection of folktale adaptations and original stories. In each tale, a girl uses her ingenuity to overcome an obstacle threatening her or her loved ones. These obstacles include forces of nature, financial difficulties, and the less-than-honorable motives of other people. For example, in "Kim's Surprise Witness," a Vietnamese girl prevents a greedy moneylender from bankrupting her parents; a young American rescues her beloved colt from a dangerous winter storm in "Cody's Wooden Whistle"; "Jamila and the Tiger" tells of how the title character rids her African village of a menacing animal foe. The quality of the writing varies; generally, the four stories adapted from folklore flow more smoothly than the six original compositions (except for two polished entries from Anne Schraff). The tone of the anthology is upbeat and celebratory. While obviously created to fill a certain niche, the heroic nature of these selections should appeal to middle-grade readers who like adventure. Teachers may also find ways to use this collection to spark classroom discussions about female roles in societies near and far.? Students will love references to giving a prissy sister a worm for her birthday, inviting Frankenstein to the party, and eating a whole cake the night before the big day. In addition to Lansky's works, eight other poets, including Dr. Seuss, are represented. Lindstrom's black-and-white drawings play up the slapstick humor: a cake is made with flour (a yellow rose), the icing with ice; candles are blown out with such enthusiasm that icing, drinks, and party hats are victims of the gale. The book is similar to the work of Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky, and the topic is beloved by all children. This slim volume is sure to be an instant success. She was the only child of attorney Millsaps Fitzhugh and Louise Perkins. After attending an exclusive girls' school, Miss Hutchison's, she attended three different colleges but never obtained a degree, and traveled in Europe, before finally settling down in New York City to pursue a career as a painter. In the late 1950s she and a friend, Sandra Scoppetone, began work on a beatnik parody of Kay Thompson's Eloise, which was published in 1961 as Suzuki Beane. In 1964 she published her first novel, Harriet the Spy. Although it received mixed reviews from adults at the time, today it is widely regarded as a forerunner to the sort of realistic children's fiction that would dominate the late 1960s and 1970s. Two novels about Harriet's friends followed: The Long Secret in 1965 and Sport, published posthumously in 1979.

Contemporary social issues figured prominently in much of Fitzhugh's work for children: Bang Bang You're Dead was a 1969 picture book with a strong anti-war message and Nobody's Family Is Going to Change (1975) explored both women's rights and children's rights. Ironically, it became the basis of the Broadway musical The Tap Dance Kid with the book's minor male characters taking a lead role, thereby completely overshadowing Emma, the female protagonist. Needless to say, this happened after Fitzhugh's untimely death in 1974 at the age of 46. Teenagers Hank Cantrell and his friend Cliff meet a ghostly cast of characters in this collection of stories set in a small Midwestern town. The motifs of the 10 tales are familiar? being buried alive, sacred Indian burial grounds, inability to give up a child, etc. Bial tells these stories in a straightforward manner and often with a touch of humor. In each selection, Hank becomes aware of cultural and moral values surrounding the ghosts and periods of history. Cliff, on the other hand, provides the comic relief while defending his cowardly attitude. The dialogue is a strength of this book and moves the plots forward; description is used to embellish the scenes and the two elements combine well for silent reading. The amount of conversation, however, does make reading aloud a bit more difficult. The Truth About Santa Claus ) meticulously researched text examines the historical, mythical, religious and physical significance of the unicorn. He describes unicornlike creatures that have existed through the ages, beginning with a "dinosaur unicorn" that lived 120 million years ago. Also documented is the appearance of unicorns in writings by Greeks and Romans, tales from ancient China and the accounts of Marco Polo and other European explorers. An insert of color photos accompanies a detailed interpretation of the renowned Franco-Flemish Unicorn tapestries. Finally, Giblin examines some contemporary "unicorns," from a goat with a transplanted horn featured in the 1985 Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to the endangered Indian rhino. McDermott's carefully rendered, dramatic drawings complement the volume's many intriguing prints and photos. Through somewhat heavy going for the casual reader, this fact- and legend-filled book will be of great interest to youngsters fascinated by the elusive unicorn. Giblin skillfully weaves the scattered references from fables, natural history, and travel tales into a coherent narrative of the developing legend of the unicorn. The recurrent appeal of the mythical beast is explained by the magical properties attributed to its shining horn, the linkage to the Christian story, and the intriguing pictorial renditions of the creature. Photographs, prints, and full-page black-and-white illustrations in a realistic style support an elegantly written text, printed on pages designed with space and grace for pleasant reading. The inclusion of a full-color insert from the Cloisters, showing the seven tapestries of the Hunt of the Unicorn, brightens the book and shows the most appealing idealization of this well-loved mythical beast. --Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews

With his usual intelligence and grace, Giblin (well-known for his award-winning nonfiction) covers the extensive history of a popular subject, once again illuminating some fascinating byways of social history with skillfully assembled facts. Recounting tales of unicorns from Chinese legend, Indian myth, and ancients in the Western world from Deuteronomy to Julius Caesar, Giblin sets them in the context of a world where many creatures were rumored but not actually seen (e.g., the rhinoceros). The book's heart is a detailed discussion of the unicorn tapestries at the Cloisters in N.Y.C. (reproduced in a color insert)--their history, their intricate symbols, the medieval Christian beliefs they exemplify, and their hold on the 20th-century imagination. Final chapters discuss uses of unicorns' (narwhal's) horns; how scientific inquiry discredited belief in the mythical beast and its powers; its role in current popular culture; and even some comments on the endangered species that generated the myth in the first place. As always, Giblin has a firm grasp on his subject's many ramifications and links them with clarity and extraordinary insight, providing a splendid model of the branches of knowledge enriching each other. Though unicorns seem ubiquitous, this is the first book for young people to explore their lore in depth.
